Simplified process for claiming home office expenses

15 December 2020 • CMCFA President

As you may be aware, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is streamlining the process for deducting home office expenses for tax purposes by allowing employees working from home to claim a Home Office Expense Deduction of up to $400 in the 2020 tax year, without the need to track detailed expenses or the need for their employer to provide a signed form (T2200).

Here is the link to the Canada Revenue Agency news release on the simplified process for claiming home office expenses: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/news/2020/12/introducing-a-simplified-process-for-claiming-the-home-office-expenses-for-canadians-working-from-home-due-to-the-covid-19-pandemic.html

A briefing with CRA is planned for all bargaining agent presidents next week. If you have any questions about the process, please send them to the CMCFA President (luu@cmcfa-apcmc.ca) by COB on Thursday, Dec 17th, so she can forward the questions to Treasury Board by the deadline of Friday, Dec 18th.
